The 6 biggest mistakes your data analyst is making right now in your business. These mistakes can tank your chances at customers, drive you to market the wrong products, and even offer you no insight but you get to pay them anyway.
1.) Jumping right into the data
This is a common issue. You really have to zoom out and look at the business needs from the outside perspective. What assumptions are we taking into account? What are the things these assumptions are dependent on? What business question are we trying to solve? A good business analyst or data analyst can take a very ambiguous question or set of questions and break it down. Often times as a business owners or stakeholder there is not a clear understanding of your business needs from the start. This leads to the ecommerce analyst or marketing analyst to making the wrong assumptions. This can provide data that is not valuable to you.
2.) Not taking marketing into account
Can we zoom out further and apply any business strategies that may have marketing impacts for the positive later? I find that new data analysts do not do this. They dive right into the data. Even if they do have a clear understanding of your needs and business insights you are looking for, they are not taking the marketing into account. A good analyst will think ‘So what?’. What is important about this data. Then think forward to think about how other departments like marketing can use it to build on existing or new campaigns.
3.) Not having domain knowledge
Not being an expert in your domain means that you are lacking in terminology. If your analyst is not privy to your niche then you may find they do not know enough about the industry to ask the right questions and anticipate the needs of the business and the future marketing. While, an expert would look into real estate if that is your niche and find your competitors, who are are they, and what are they doing, That way they know how to help you be one step ahead.
4.) Not using the best tools
Different tools offer different features. Excel has VBA, macro, and Power Query options. However, SQL can handle more rows. Without knowing what tools can handle and offer what features you are at a loss as to what is the best for your particular project. Not being an expert in your tools It is great to know a little about a lot. However, it is even better to be a master in a little. Mastering your area of expertise is more important than being so so in a little.
5.) Poor visualizations
Can you understand the visualization in under 5 seconds? If not it is too complicated? You do not have the time to ready everything. They need to make it simple, clear, easy to understand. It need to be presentation quickly and efficiently. This should take 2-3 minutes. Soft skills in a data analyst are so under looked. An analyst need to, get straight to business and provide the business insights and the ‘so what’.
